Nature of the Job Market in Scotland
UK's job market is primarily driven by the Employment Agencies, which they offer different types of employment. But three key types of employment are Permanenet, Contract and Fixed Term Contract.
A permanent position means you will be employed by the company. In a permanent position normally you will be offered an annual salary (paid monthly) and all other usual employee benefits. Contract positions are temporary and normally offered to provide specialist skills to the end client for a limited period of time or until a specific assignment or a project is completed. usual benefits are number of paid annual holidays (usually 25 or more), Medical or Life Insurance or annual bonuses.
However, the employee benefits are depending on the employer or the company you would work for and not necessarily the same across all employers. As an employee, your salary will be paid to your bank account with all taxes and levies deducted.
Contract jobs are normally offered in short terms starting from 3 months. But these are more likely to be extended for longer terms on average up to 2 years. Contractors are usually not entitled for the usual benefits offered to an employee. Contractors are paid on daily or hourly basis, which is normally called as 'Daily Rate' or 'Hourly Rate'. As a contractor you will be working through your own 'Limited Company' or an 'Umbrella Company'. It is fairly straight forward to setup your own Limited Company and even easier to enroll with an umbrella company. First step is to find a contract job. More information for contractors are available through here or search the internet. As a contractor you are responsible to pay all relevant taxes and levies. But your accountant could do all these on your behalf.
Fixed Term contracts are always 'fixed' for a specific length of time. In most cases you are entitled for usual 'Employee Benefits'. Your salary will be based a on an annual salary and it will be pro-rated for the duration of the 'Fixed Term' of your employment. Some companies offer a permanent position at the end of a 'Fixed Term' contract, but it always depends on how you performed and their needs.
